The origins of Tambourelli are lost in the mists of antiquity. There is a picture in the Louvre in Paris, taken from Iraq, of Shamash, the Babylonian Sun God playing what looks like Tambourelli with his acolytes. There is also a picture of the Chinese Moon Goddess, Ch’ang-O playing a more solitary version.
